The Medicare Safety Net gives extra Medicare help when a family’s out‑of‑hospital Medicare costs in a calendar year pass certain limits.
Original Safety Net: starts after $594.40 spent. Saves about $13–$37 per visit.
Extended Safety Net: starts after $2,699.10 spent. Medicare then covers 80% of out‑of‑pocket costs.
Example: a $630 visit
Medicare rebate: $265.60
Remaining gap: $364.40 → Medicare pays 80% = $291.50
You pay: $72.90
Concessional/Family Tax Benefit Part A Extended Safety Net: starts after $861.20 spent. Medicare covers 80% of out‑of‑pocket costs.
